Birds in Bill's back yard

Red Bellied Woodpecker

Red Bellied Woodpecker

This was a nice addition to the list becuase we usually only have Downy's.  This bird hangs around mostly the peanut feeders.

Wood Thrush

Wood Thrush

I didn't even know there was such a bird, but here it is.  I was told they're pretty common.  As our neighborhood ages, we get a larger variety of birds over time.

Tufted Titmouse

This is another bird has probably been here before, but today is the first day I noticed.  This bird prefers the tube peanut feeder.

Red-breasted Nuthatch
I was told that these birds usually do not migrate this far south in such great numbers, so this must be my lucky year.  Like his relatives, he prefers the tube peanut feeder.  A beautiful bird.

White-crowned Sparrow

I saw this bird at just before dark and first thought is was just an aberration.  Then, I discovered that there is actually a bird that looks like this.  Pretty bizarre.

Rose-Breasted Grosebeak

Our daughter, Courtney, says she saw this bird today and she described it pretty well, so we will give her credit for it.    :-)

Cardinal
One of my favorites.  They show up early morning and late evening; sometimes during the day if they get desperate.  They don't like to feed in a crowd.  Both the male and female visit together.

Carolina Chickadee
I like this bird.  It is sleek looking and visits the feeders occasionally throughout the day.

Downy Woodpecker
I like this bird also.  He usually shows up at my nut tube when few others are around.  He will peck at the nuts for up to 5 minutes and sometimes just hang on the feeder and look around.

White-breasted Nuthatch
I don't see this bird too much, but when he comes around, he prefers the tube nut feeder.  Must be how he got his name.

Northern Flicker
I saw this bird for the first time today (20041223) and didn't know what it was.  He was around only for a little bit, so maybe was just passing through.  The underside of his wings show a gold color in flight; looks real neat.  Saw him again today (20050123) so he may become a regular.

Goldfinch
These are neat little birds.  This fall there were a bunch of little ones feeding at both thistle feeders.  Now I only see them occasionally.

House Finch
I saw one today with all the song sparrows.  I like this bird pretty well; I guess I like the red coloration best.

Junco (Snowbird)
I have these for the first time this year.  We have snow right now so they are easy to see.  They kind of scoot across the snow in a unique manner (unlike other birds).

Song Sparrow
I call these the dumb birds.  They are not my favorite, but they are hungry and there are a lot of them.  I'll just believe that all their activity attracts other birds to the feeders (so I will let them stay).

Jack Sparrow
This Sparrow is not related to the Song or House Sparrow, but I like him so here he is.

Red Winged Blackbird
This bird has probably visited before, but this is the first day I have seen one.

Carolina Wren
A pretty neat little bird with very distinctive markings.  I saw this bird for the first time today and he was mostly diligently pecking at the peanut feeder.

Blue Jay
Some people call these birds "bullies," but I think they are cool looking birds.  We see them occasionally, but I believe they migrate south in winter.

European Starling
Another one that is not a favorite, but they look kind of neat.  They just started showing up recently (20041220)

Brown-Headed
Cowbird
Neat bird (well, the male is) - only saw the pair for a few minutes.  This bird lets other birds raise it's eggs.  Strange.

Ring-necked
Pheasant
This is the female version so there is no ringed-neck or as much color.  I saw this bird feeding for a brief period last Sunday.

Grackle
This bird ranks down along with the Starling, but I do like its yellow "bug eye" look.

Blackbird
Not a favorite, but he shows up occasionally.
